EBFAM grew as an idea in the founder's mind's eye over a period of years in the late 90's and early years of the 21st century. First it was as a general awareness of something important being missing in what was on offer in the AH marketplace, then it became an increasing frustration that nothing was being done about it. Finally a traumatic period for the founder brought the whole situation into sharp relief, and he knew that some new mechanism was needed to bring about the necessary changes. Thus it was that the Eileen Bowler Foundation for Alternative Medicine was conceived, and EBFAM became the mechanism to achieve those changes.
The AH marketplace is something of a jungle for the average consumer, with a lack of clear guidelines as to what might be the best selections to make to gain the most benefit in the circumstances that they find themselves in. There are no 'centres of excellence' to get impartial advice from, only a host of competing disciplines each with their own protagonists insisting that they are offering the best treatments available. Whilst the internet has made information on the many modalities widely available, it has not helped choosing what may be the best course of action for a given individual any clearer.
There are no large companies willing to be involved in AH treatments (rather than orthodox treatments) for the simple reason that they cannot become profitable because they are not standardized and the set-up and running costs are not state funded. Legislation is increasingly restrictive and insurance premiums for any kind of treatment difficult to come by, and expensive when obtained. Funding therefore is not only missing at the level of the individual, but also at the coordinating level for the many practitioner organisations that currently exist.
EBFAM as a charity can hope to rise above these conflicts of interest and provide the leadership necessary to bring about a paradigm shift in how AH is organized and delivered to the user at the point when they are most in need.
That is our challenge, and our goal.
